The Department of Energy announced Thursday a $100,000 prize for software developers to come up with mobile applications to tell consumers how much energy they are using.
But there’s already an app for that...(There are actually several)

A quick scan of the iTunes and Android markets shows nearly two dozen existing applications that accomplish the same purpose — helping users keep track of their energy consumption at home.

Just last year there was another Energy department contest to develop the best LED lightbulb. The prize was over a 10 million dollars and the winner was...PHILLIPS. The price of this "new" bulb...over $50.00.

The catch is...You can go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy the same bulb for $19.00.

U.S. Taxpayer paid Philips Global $10 million and all they got was a $50 light bulb

The Department of Energy paid Dutch energy-giant Philips Global $10 million for its newest LED light bulb. Now the two are trying to figure out what to do with it.

The bulb, which is slated to replace the 60-watt incandescent light bulb lawmakers banned in 2007, costs $50, well above the $1 consumers are used to spending on traditional bulbs and double the price of many existing LED lights.
